Overview

A perfect weekend escape to the Serpent’s Peak

Make your weekend holidays adventurous while walking on the forest-covered trail of Nag Tibba. Not all mountains are far away when you truly wish to live them — and Nag Tibba is the perfect example. This trek is one of the best, nearest, and easiest hiking and camping options for those who prefer a short travel journey and a gentle trail without steep climbs, yet wish to enjoy the breathtaking views of the snow-covered peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas.

Located near the famous hill station Mussoorie in Uttarakhand, the Nag Tibba Trek beautifully represents the region’s Himalayan landscapes, mountain culture, and rich biodiversity. Rising to an altitude of 3,022 metres (9,915 ft), the Nag Tibba summit is the highest peak in the Nag Tibba range of the lower Himalayas. The total trekking distance is around 16 km (both ways) — short enough for a weekend, yet scenic enough to give you a true taste of the Himalayas.

As you walk through pine, oak, and rhododendron forests, the trail gradually opens into wide meadows and high ridgelines. From the summit, trekkers are rewarded with magnificent 360° Himalayan views — including Swargarohini (6,252 m), Bandarpoonch (6,316 m), Kala Nag (6,387 m), Srikantha (6,133 m), and distant peaks from the Gangotri group (above 6,500 m). Watching these giants glisten under the morning sun is a memory that stays forever.

For those looking to escape city life and experience real Himalayan beauty in a short span, the Nag Tibba Trek offers everything — snow trails, forest walks, open meadows, and summit views — making it one of the most loved weekend treks near Dehradun and an ideal short Himalayan adventure in Uttarakhand.

Itinerary

DAY 1: Dehradun to Pantwari village via Kempty Falls | Drive Distance: 95km | Duration: 3:30 hours | Elevation: 1350m

Drive: 90 km | 3 hours
Trek: 5 km | 4 hours
Altitude: Pantwari (2,200 m) → Nag Temple Campsite (2,800 m)

Your weekend adventure begins early morning from Dehradun Railway Station or ISBT, where our vehicle will receive you at 7:00 AM sharp. The drive winds through Mussoorie’s pine-covered hills, past the lively buzz of Kempty Falls, where we stop for a short breakfast break. Hot tea and parathas taste better with the mist rolling off the hills.

Soon, we leave the crowds behind and head toward Pantwari village, crossing the Yamuna Bridge and turning uphill from Nainbagh. The road gently climbs through terraced farms and small mountain homes until we reach Pantwari, perched beautifully at 2,200 meters.

Here, you’ll meet our Great Indian Trails support crew, who’ll brief you on the route and eco-friendly trekking practices. The trek begins on a well-defined mountain path, gradually ascending through grassy slopes. As you climb higher, the village fades behind and the crisp mountain air takes over, filling every breath with freshness and calm.

After about an hour, the trail enters a dense oak and rhododendron forest—the heart of Nag Tibba. The shade, birdsong, and scent of pine make this section a delight for hikers. Stop midway for your packed lunch, take in the silence, and enjoy the rhythm of walking in the wild.

By afternoon, the forest opens into the open meadow of Khatian, offering your first panoramic view of the valley. A short half-hour walk further leads to our serene Nag Temple campsite, located just below the sacred shrine of the Serpent God, at 2,800 meters.

Evenings here are tranquil and restorative. You can choose to visit the Nag Devta Temple, wander near the grazing sheep, or simply sit by your tent and watch the sunset fade over the forested ridges. As an eco-friendly trekking company, we avoid bonfires to protect the fragile ecosystem—so instead, our camps are lit softly, allowing you to enjoy the natural quiet of the mountains under a canopy of stars.

DAY 2: Base Camp to Nag Tibba Summit | Trek Distance: 4 km | Duration: 3 – 4 hours

Trek: 9 km total | 6 hours
Altitude: Nag Temple (2,800 m) → Summit (3,022 m / 9,915 ft) → Pantwari (2,200 m)
Drive: 90 km | 3 hours

Wake up early to the sound of birds and the soft mountain breeze. The first light over the ridges paints the forest golden—perfect for photography and quiet reflection. After a hearty breakfast, begin your summit hike, a short but steep 2 km stretch to the top of Nag Tibba (3,022 m).

At the summit, colorful flags flutter around a small shrine dedicated to the local deity. From this high point, you’re rewarded with unforgettable views of the Garhwal Himalayas—including Swargarohini (6,252 m), Bandarpunch (6,316 m), Kala Nag (6,387 m), Srikantha (6,133 m), and even the distant Gangotri peaks on a clear day.

Spend some quiet moments here—it’s amazing how much peace a weekend in the Himalayas can bring.

After soaking in the views and capturing your memories, descend to the campsite for a freshly cooked lunch prepared by our kitchen team. Later, continue trekking downhill toward Pantwari village via the same route.

Your vehicle will be waiting at Pantwari to take you back to Dehradun, marking the end of this short yet soul-satisfying Himalayan journey. you can expect to reach Dehradun by 7 pm.
